I've been spending a great deal of time (perhaps too much) researching Lupus since my diagnosis. I've wanted to be informed when attending my follow-up appointment with the rheumatologist (as he sadly didn't offer me with many resources), and have wanted to expose myself to alternative treatment options that an allopathic doctor would not typically suggest to me. The most commonly advocated alternative treatment for autoimmune diseases is an appropriate diet that eliminates food sensitivities and common toxins. Guess what? I have a head start. My intuition has clearly served me well in that department. Besides eliminating gluten, however, a diet largely made up of raw foods seems to be the most commonly talked about diet, which according to various anecdotal stories shared via the web and to me personally, can alleviate many of the symptoms and even lead some to remission. This gives me great hope, although I am keeping that hope in check with the understanding that every body is different; what works for one may not work for another. Let me be clear that Lupus is potentially a very serious disease, and therefore alternative treatments for it are highly controversial. I have the advantage of only having mild Lupus at this time (in my mind thanks to the dietary changes I've made, though I will elaborate on that more at a different time), and consequently have some leeway to experiment. Summer is an excellent time to eat raw food, as well; I am more than happy to rarely turn on the stove. I'm a little bit more skeptical about how this will work out in a cold New England winter, given that I also have Raynaud's. Anyone with experience in that department, please share your thoughts in the comments!

So, have I noticed any improvements since making the shift? Hell yes. My cravings for starch and sweets have decreased significantly. My portion control (typically something I really struggle with) is leaps and bounds beyond what it has been. Also, when I've made exceptions to my diet by indulging in typically forbidden foods, my reactions are far less severe, and I recover much more quickly. Want an example? I'm eating fruit. Let me put that into perspective for you: with the exception of lemon & avocado, I haven't eaten fruit for almost 2 years. I've been following the recommendations of the Body Ecology Diet and eating it only in the morning and always by itself, but I've made some exceptions to that, as well. Papaya, pear & banana have been recent trials. Want another example? Today, my husband and I went to Kickass Cupcakes, where I indulged in not one, but two gluten-free cupcakes. (Sugar, eggs, flours, oh my!) So far, I'm suffering from some mild brain fog, but otherwise I'm okay. I followed the trip up with some raw celery to help move it along, and some stevia-sweetened sparkling mineral water with added peppermint oil to soothe any possible inflammation.

I would love it if you would share your thoughts on this approach. I am still holding off on fulfilling my prescription for Plaquenil at the pharmacy, but beginning to warm up to the idea. How do you treat your illness? Have you improved from an autoimmune disease through diet? Have you tried the raw food diet and improved your health? Have you recovered? Or are you one of the many who feels it to be a naive and mislead approach? Please weigh in.

In the meantime, here are two resources I have taken advantage of:

Ravi Buffington is a friend of a dear local friend of mine. I was referred to her because she apparently used to have severe life-threatening Lupus which she put into remission on a raw food diet. She owns an organic food and gardening shop in Florida. I'm most grateful to her for sharing me her story over the phone, and by providing me with some helpful resources.

I discovered your blog through Stephmodo and when I saw your diagnosis was Lupus I had to investigate. I too was diagnosed with Lupus in l993. I am 55 years old and have been extremely blessed to have very few symptoms. After a very stressful year in 2006 I had a serious flareup and along with several other medications to treat the problems I also started Plaquenil. Gratefully that is the only medication I still take. I have had no side effects (although few are expected) and have had some great benefits. My hair is thicker, and my nails don't split and peel. I HATE the thought that I will take it forever but the thought of another flareup makes it worthwhile. Sorry for the lengthy comment! Good luck to you, and you have inspired this Diet Coke drinking, sugar addict to rethink what I am eating:)

Oh, thank you so much for sharing this, Cherie. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! I'm really happy to hear that your suffering has been minimal. It is heartening to me that it seems a great deal of people are on Plaquenil for many years without significant side effects. Like you, though, the thought of taking it every day for the rest of my life (especially since I am still in my 20's) is really terrifying!
So happy to know that you are rethinking your diet--I can't emphasize enough what a huge difference it has made in my life. I have no doubt that if I had been diagnosed before modifying my diet, that the rheumatologist would not have considered mine a mild case as it is now. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do help you out!

I just happened upon your website and it's very nicely done! I am always searching for info about lupus being pushed into remission with diet. I chose not to take medications recommended to me and have tried so many things from the age of 30 until now (58) and eliminating nightshades really made a difference. But I wasn't able to gain weight no matter how much I ate I just wasn't absorbing nutrients it appeared. I seemed to be wasting away and none of the numerous supplements worked. I attributed this to over 30 years of chronic herpes. I decided to try the raw milk cure. I was always allergic to dairy but raw doesn't bother me. I started with only a tsp. and worked up to quarts a day of milk both fresh and clabbered and sour cream. I have gained weight, (much of it muscle mass), lost the dark circles around my eyes and feel better both mentally and physically.
I am now adding to the raw dairy, raw egg yolks to organic veg/fruit juice and starting to eat some cooked foods as well excluding grains and nightshades or pasteurised dairy. I hope that in a few years I will see even more improvement.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Lupus, Raynauds and Scleroderma. I am 62...but probably had it for a few years. So far I at mid range and not alot of symptoms. I had already switched to gluten free before diagnosis. My husband has a gluten allergy so it just made sense. I was fortunate to find a holistic doctor who also was an MD for 30 yrs who ran all the right test to see what I was deficient in. The two things happen to be what causes autoimmune problems. Boron and Vit D3. Without Boron you will not absorb Vit D3. Boron was something we USE to get from our veggies. But the soil has been depleted through farming practices and even organic do not have this mineral. If you have a garden lightly sprinkle Borax on the soil and your plants will uptake it and you will get boron through your veggies. I just came off a 15 day fast...only I cheated and didn't eat the right foods when I stopped. Now I am going to start over to get my stomach rested and healed. I no longer feel exhausted, itchy, brain fog etc...but if I eat anything that is detrimental....within a few days I know it. I eat no grain, sugar, sodas, meat, fish, or dairy. However, I just found a source for raw milk and will utilize that in the future if I don't prove sensitive to dairy. Raw and organic are definitely the way to go but initially fasting for 3 to 10 days can help the body recover from a flare. Hope this helps someone.

PS --- forgot to say that I take 3mg of Boron with 5,000 IU of D3 everyday plus lysine, tumeric, curamin, and collidal silver when glands swell. Also, oil of oregano for skin rash.

It's strange that the blog isn't showing a "reply" option so that you all can individually know what comments I am responding to! Apologies go to all of you, though, for a late reply. I must admit that I became burnt out on cooking after so many years of intensely focusing on it, so I'm not here so often anymore.

Anonymous from April 24, 2013: That's incredible! I'm so glad that you found something that has helped you so much! That must feel like such a powerful relief after so many years of suffering. I am so sorry, and I hope that the continued introduction of the raw dairy helps you. I'm very curious about this.

Anonymous from July 8, 2014: I'm really happy to hear that your symptoms haven't overly manifested themselves yet. I'm so jealous of your doctor! It's so hard to find someone well-trained in both fields of medicine. So far, my few experiences with naturopaths were actually really disappointing and expensive. It's so important to have someone that you can trust.

Actually, a couple of months after my Lupus diagnosis, I switched to a rheumatologist that I trusted more, and my diagnosis was countered. My diagnosis now is Sjogren's with accompanying Raynaud's, and Fibromyalgia. (These are my auto-immune disease diagnosis, anyway. I have others outside of the rheumatological field, sadly.) I've been reading a lot about supplements, and so far, I don't think I've noted the Boron. I'll have to try some out. I recently started taking Curamin, too! I still have a lot of pain, so that's disappointing, but I have so much more energy, and my mood has really improved, so I'm really grateful for that. I appreciate your suggestions, and will note them.

Thank you both for sharing, and I hope that some of the recipes here help you as they helped me.
